Often in my role as “navigator” on my clients’ design journey, I am asked “what can I do to make this room bold but not over the top?” More often than not I say, “Look up.” Described as the fifth wall in every room, the lowly ceiling is often neglected and forgotten. At best, it gets a fresh coat of white paint. Consider using the ceiling as a canvas to take your room from bland to grand.
Pro Design Tips:
• Select patterns that are non-directional with ceiling wallcoverings. It is key that the pattern looks identical from every angle.
• Go bold with your ceiling color choice. Paint will always feel two shades less intense when applied to a ceiling as opposed to a flat vertical surface.
• Define the space. For the best results, painted and wallpapered ceilings always look better when paired with crown molding.
• Repeat it. The introduction of pattern and color should not stop at the ceiling. Use one or two touches of the accent color in varying tones at eye level in the room.
Don’t forget to paint it all. In this restful bedroom, the entire ceiling, including the HVAC vents, are painted in the same tranquil aqua. When painting a ceiling, remember that anything that remains unpainted will stand out. This goes for ceiling fans and recessed lighting rings too!
With most of the wall space in this kitchen redo taken up by custom cabinetry a focal point was created by applying classic floral wallcovering to the ceiling. The rich caramel wall color was repeated in the background of the wallcovering to create a seamless effect.
