Generally Speaking
Imagine an old-school general store. There are shelves neatly lined with glass bottles and jars, magazines with generational recipes, and a smiling man behind the counter pulling out penny candy. 56, a shop in downtown York, has modernized that nostalgic image. The store carries a broad variety of items that range from food products to t-shirts to notepads. Bacon mayonnaise, apple spiced syrup, and bourbon marshmallows are a few of their unique treats. The majority of the apparel and other gifts are locally crafted, from companies such as owner Alison Given’s brand, Oliver & Co. At 56, you will find special items that aren’t meant to be buried in shopping carts. These gifts create a unique and vintage-inspired personality that is signature to this new urban general store. - K.Y.

Community Corner
You might have heard of this wedding trend: many brides- and grooms-to-be are foregoing traditional wedding favors and instead are donating those funds to a charity. Some even ask that guests give a charitable gift instead of a physical present. But what if you had the option to have some of the proceeds of your big day donated to a worthy cause? If you’re planning a major event in the Susquehanna Valley, you’ll be happy to hear that you have this opportunity. All net proceeds from the events held at Ironstone Ranch, a gorgeous working horse ranch with a restored 1800s-era barn, are donated to the not-for-profit organization Brittany’s Hope. Brittany’s Hope helps unite children with loving families by providing grants to help reduce the financial barrier of international adoption. For those children still waiting to find their forever home, the organization provides a nurturing environment with access to warm meals, clean water, and a safe place to sleep. - H.W.

What would you say makes a house a home?
"That your home is essentially your life curated: a collection of travel mementos, family memories, and little comforts that show where you've been and where you're going. And books —you have to have books.” — Sarah Cahill
