Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Every year, back to school shopping seems to be advertised sooner and sooner. I recall seeing signs for it right after Independence Day. With all of the marketing and advertising screaming back-to-school on a daily basis, it’s hard to not get in the mood to add to your son or daughter’s closet. Not to mention, kids seem to grow at a rapid pace, so nothing from last year fits anymore.
I feel as though children’s fashion has evolved over the years. Gone are just the head to toe character outfits (I know they still sell them, but not as much as they used to it seems). I can’t tell you how many times I see an outfit in my daughter’s size and wish they made it in adult sizes too.
With fashion evolving and trends carrying over into children’s, tweens’ and teens’ clothing, it’s easier to tackle the back-to-school shopping.
So what can you expect to see this fall for your kids? I’ve rounded up the top four trends you can expect to see roaming the halls at the start of the school year.
Plaid: I’m not talking your basic plaid button up (although those are still very much in style). Plaid skirts, dresses, shoes, and accessories like headbands, bracelets and even watches are what you will be seeing. Plaid is definitely something to incorporate into their wardrobe.

‘90s: Yes, you read that right. The ‘90s are back. If you remember plaid being popular in the ‘90s (it was more of a grunge look) then you certainly remember other trends as well. High top sneakers and Mary Janes are making a huge comeback. Not only are they cute, they will get your tot through the school day comfortably! Time for me to dust off my Doc Martin Mary Janes from junior high!
Athleisure: Think work out to wear out, as I like to say. These are the clothes that have that athletic look and feel but are stylish enough to wear to school. For girls, its joggers, which are now available in a variety of prints and colors. For the guys, graphic tees and varsity jackets are what’s popular.
Vibrant Sneakers: Slip-on sneakers have proven to be quite the trend, as they have lasted for well over a year. This is a trend that is going to continue well into the school year. What’s great about slip-on sneakers is how easy they are to get on and off (great for those running a little too late mornings), and even better, you can get them in just about any color or print: purple, leopard, hearts, floral, or even superhero styles like Batman or Superman (This trend carries over to adults as well. I have several pairs of colorful or patterned sneakers).
Embrace the back-to-school, fall trends that you will be seeing. The good thing about them is that they are here to stay for a while, and can be carried into the colder months.
